one of the stranger characters in the cast of my seldom viewed Vimeo web series of a life in Vienna is the Austro-Filipino man who cuts my hair, Ennerich.

we met at a hair salon, where he promptly got fired for some ambiguous reason (once he told me for smoking pot, another time for stealing customers, and another time for stealing thousands of euros.) after he was fired, we started having hair cuts either at his house or mine, which made it way better, and half the price.

he’s super into hip hop and speaks English in exaggerated 90s slang (with a German accent). our hair cuts consist of us getting stoned, listening to 90s hip hop, and drinking beer. I teach him “hood” idioms in English (as best as a suburban white boy can do).

he just left and now I am super baked, half drunk, with an ultra fly do (thanks emmerich), and on the way to a stuffy cracker ass party hosted by the Swiss delegation. trying to eat enough Danish cheese to sober up.

perhaps I’m being nationalistic or influenced by Western media, but Russia’s attempt to use a spy kit straight out of a 1970s film (a compass and paper map? shitty wigs? I imagine the CIA is a bit more savvy) to label a diplomat as a spy is really lame. furthermore, it fits with the increasingly frantic behavior of the Kremlin to gain support and mobilize the frustrated people by opening up battles against imaginary enemies, be it the foreign operatives of international organizations, Americans wanting to adopt kids, gays, feminists, whatever.

seeing Russian diplomacy in action and being more and more exposed to Eastern European politics really makes me despise Putin and the Russian state. it’s much more insidious that I had previously understood.

post-winter jacket, pre-summer is most enjoyable because I look so good in a suit on my bike to work, which goes through the cobblestone roads of Vienna’s first district and along the leafy Ringstrasse. I need to enjoy it now because in a few weeks all that will be served is sweaty business casual realness and it won’t be nearly as cute.

one of the weirder times of the year in the German speaking world (though, to be fair, it’s always a little bit weird in these parts) is the mid-spring asparagus season, known as Spargelzeit (asparagus time). Germans and Austrians lose their shit over this phallic green and white vegetable, and the entire month of May is dedicated to eating asparagus in all of its forms. wrapped in prosciutto with hollandaise sauce, in salads, in soups, grilled, boiled, whatever goes as long as you eat it EVERY DAY ALL DAY. they just sit in gardens absorbing the sun after months of winter and chomping down asparagus like its their job. then, as soon as the Spargelzeit came, it disappears, and there is no asparagus to be found anywhere until the following May.
