Gay bar in Denmark won't let straight couples kiss

gaywrites:

Never Mind, a gay bar in Copenhagen, has sparked international media attention because of a new rule that bans straight couples from kissing in the bar.

According to the owner, a common complaint from guests is that there are too many straight people in the bar.

Never Mind’s owner told the Copenhagen Post that he didn’t see the “big problem” in his establishment’s policy. “I know that we need equal rights, but this is a gay bar,” Christian Carlsen is quoted as saying. “We obviously have a lot of guests who aren’t homosexuals and that’s fine as long as they understand that this is a gay bar. The gays can’t go to so many other places to meet each other.”

The Huffington Post has an interesting debate going based on this story and I’d like to add to it. Is this OK? Should gay bars have policies against straight couples, or is this discrimination just as bad as banning gay couples from non-gay bars?

gay writes is the worst tumblr ever (but I still read it to learn about how the gays that make me want to barf are thinking)

fuuuuuck yeah copenhagen gay bar for being sassy and provocative and making people think.

  3. codepoetblog answered: Hahahahahahahahaha. That said, yes, it’s just as discriminatory as banning gay couples from PDA in non-gay bars.

I don’t think it’s as bad as bars banning gay couples at all, but this is still problematic. Shouldn’t we stop the great...
  8. ibleedtechnicolor answered: PDA in general should be banned. There’s a time and place for intimate actions. Out in public isn’t either of them.
  9. virginred answered: um as a bisexual i am so sick of not feeling welcome in either space. straight couples should be allowed in only if they’re w/ gay friends?

  12. tex117 answered: It’s hypocritical. I’m all for gay rights, being bisexual myself, but doing this as we struggle to be accepted, is not okay.
  13. dorkmcawesome said: An ‘us v. them’ mentality will only cause more discrimination. :(
  14. mydearmotherwar answered: I think this is a great way to expose the double standard that exists!
  15. yukitsukihana answered: Discrimination is discrimination and should not be tolerated. Equal rights goes both ways.

WTF? This is just as bad, and the owner of this bar should be ashamed of themselves. :|
  18. idrinkpaintforbreakfast answered: No, it’s not okay. It’s hypocritical. “Love is love” is the main quote of the gay right movement, right? Whether it’s gay or straight love.
  19. murloc23 answered: It’s discrimination, so it’s just as bad.
  20. homoanatinus answered: I support it because it forces people to think.

  28. imaginearianne said: I kind of like it. Gay bars are supposed to be a safe place to be gay, and straight people who go to them for the novelty of it can violate that safe feeling.
  29. vintagejellyfish answered: Of course this discrimination is just as bad! How does this make us any better than those who oppress us?
  30. starry-ragdolls answered: I think it’s discriminating against straight couples. I think gay bars should be welcoming to all and sexuality shouldn’t be an issue at all.

  33. eddieredmaybes answered: This isn’t exactly good to do, but if it’s just being used as a way to show them what it feels like being gay in the real world I’m all for i
  34. eggsandgoats answered: It’s obviously just as bad and backwards. But part of me likes it.

  36. blowseph answered: This is ridiculous. Prejudice does not fight prejudice. Straight people in a gay bar isn’t a crime, its just tacky.
